Five questions with CEFS Apprentice Peyton Rudman

We're excited to welcome Peyton Rudman to Raleigh City Farm as our newest CEFS Apprentice! The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) is a collaborative initiative between NC State, NC A&T, and the NC Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, dedicated to building equitable food and farming systems that support communities, health, and the environment. Peyton recently earned a degree in Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems from NC State University and is eager to gain hands-on experience in regenerative agriculture. Having first connected with Raleigh City Farm as an intern in 2021, Peyton is thrilled to return to the farm that sparked a passion for urban farming and sustainable food systems. We can't wait to see the impact Peyton makes during this apprenticeship! Please enjoy Peyton’s responses to our five questions:

1) Why did you decide to become a CEFS Apprentice?

I am becoming a CEFS Apprentice because I want to further my knowledge and skills in regenerative agriculture through hands-on learning. I recently graduated with my degree in Agroecology and Sustainable Food Systems from NC State University and realized I needed more on the job training on a farm before starting my career in this field.

2) Why did you choose Raleigh City Farm as your farming partner?

I chose Raleigh City Farm as my farming partner because it was the first place I learned about urban farming and regenerative practices! I was an intern at Raleigh City Farm in the Fall of 2021, before I even started my degree at NC State. Raleigh City Farm is where I fell in love with growing food in a sustainable manner and supporting my local community.

3) What excites you about working with the Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS)?

The Center for Environmental Farming Systems (CEFS) is an amazing organization within the field of sustainable agriculture and community food systems. They are a strong leader in the local food industry and strive to support individuals who are passionate about doing the work to feed and to support our communities! I first learned of them through NC State in my degree program and I'm very excited to be working with them through this apprenticeship.

4) How do you hope to contribute to Raleigh City Farm during your apprenticeship?

I would love to contribute to the mission of the Future Farms Initiative and help build the foundation that will allow us to continue farming for generations! I'm very passionate about the connection between growing food, cooking together and then sharing meals with one another. I hope to be a part of creating space for meals and conversations shared together.

5) What’s your favorite vegetable?

My favorite vegetables are carrots! Fresh, roasted, or put in a soup, they are delicious!
