Meet Our Dynamic Summer Intern Team
We’re excited to advance the next generation of “Farmhers” through this summer’s internship program. Three outstanding women are working on the ground learning and growing with our Farm Manager Josh Sattin and one is working “behind the scenes” with our marketing/communications team. Raleigh City Farm is fortunate to have their skills and energy and we’d love to introduce them to you!
Tessie Castillo applied to Raleigh City Farm because she had extra free time due to COVID-19. She also wanted to get more involved in her community and learn a valuable skill like how to grow her own food. On her days working at the Farm, Tessie plants, weeds, harvests, washes, and packages produce. She describes the culture as “laid back” and says that everyone is appreciative of the work that she and the interns do. Tessie loves being at the Farm, because “it is such a peaceful, beautiful place.” As a writer and social justice advocate, she has plans to begin writing about farming.
Catie Craft, the Marketing & Communications intern, is a rising junior at NC State University where she is majoring in Business Administration with a Marketing concentration and Spanish minor. Her first introduction was through volunteering and she loved the relaxed and positive atmosphere, so she applied for the internship opportunity. Catie is involved with social media, blog, Farmstand sales, merchandise, and website content. After a month on the job, Catie has already learned so much about marketing. Her favorite things about interning at RCF are getting to see the impact on the community and gaining marketing experience.
Erica Lisowe is studying Biological Engineering with an Ecological Engineering concentration and a Horticulture minor at NC State. Erica applied to Raleigh City Farm to learn more about practical horticultural and agricultural skills, and she wanted to explore the connection that RCF has between community, education, and sustainability. Erica says that places like RCF “uplift our community and help us all grow together.” Although her days spent at the farm vary, Wednesday morning is when all of the interns come to the farm and prepare veg for Farmstand by harvesting, washing, and prepping produce. She says that Raleigh City Farm has an incredibly welcoming atmosphere and that she loves the hands-on aspect of the internship.
Kate Shadwell is majoring in Environmental Technology and Management. Kate applied to Raleigh City Farm because she loves the idea of urban farms, and she wants to gain farming experience for her future career. “I love learning and teaching others about sustainable agriculture so Raleigh City Farm is the perfect place for me,” she explains. Kate describes the culture at Raleigh City Farm as working hard while having a great time, and her favorite part about interning at RCF is the community. She says that people show up to the farm on a weekly basis to help out.
