Five Questions with Amy Gilbert, our Program & Partnership Coordinator

Hi everyone! I’m blogging today to introduce myself as Raleigh City Farm’s new Program & Partnership Coordinator. My name is Amy Gilbert, and I feel fortunate to be spending lots more time lately at this special place! I’ve answered five questions from the team so you can know a little more about me.

What brought you to food systems?

I am fascinated and intrigued by nature, plants, and food.  My studies in biology and public health sparked curiosity in nutrition, our food system, and the impact of diet on human health and the environment.  My interest has grown while raising a family and spending time volunteering with hunger relief organizations.  Leading a school garden opened my eyes to the importance of exposing people to growing healthy food, like we do at Raleigh City Farm.  It provides great opportunities to learn where our food comes from, what real food tastes like, and how we can make food choices that are good for our bodies and the planet.

Why did you choose Raleigh City Farm?

The energy of the plants and the people pulled me in!  Raleigh City Farm is a uniquely cultivated ecosystem that is thriving; staff and volunteers have poured their hearts into this community, and it shows. It is an inviting and friendly place to be, and I’m thrilled to be part of it all. I chose Raleigh City Farm because I want to contribute to sustaining this resilient nonprofit farm and fulfilling its mission to connect and nourish our community through regenerative agriculture.

What perspective do you hope to bring to the team?

With a background in science and research, I approach things analytically and methodically. I am curious and eager to learn, and open to new and creative ways to get things done. I bring a willingness to pitch in whenever needed, to switch hats regularly, and adjust course as required.

What’s your favorite vegetable?

If pressed to choose only one, I’d say sugar snap peas. They’re a beautiful plant and taste amazing picked straight off the vine or in a stir fry or salad; their shoots are delicious too!

What makes you most excited about working with Raleigh City Farm?

As we expand to our second location at Marsh Creek Park, I look forward to strengthening and growing our programs and partnerships at our two sites in Raleigh.  I’m excited to continue to build healthier communities as we bring people together to learn about regenerative agriculture and improve access to nutritious, locally grown produce.
