Introducing Nextgen Farmer Johnny Davis and his Marvelous Microgreens!
The mission of Raleigh City Farm is to “grow the next generation of farmers by connecting our community to sustainable agriculture.” We were fortunate to get connected to NC State student Johnny Davis who volunteered for several workdays in the spring. Turns out, Johnny loves the idea of promoting sustainability and efficiency and he believes that growing microgreens is the start of a vision that meshes both of those ideologies, while also promoting healthy lifestyle choices. You can follow his adventures on Instagram to learn more.
We sold his microgreens at our Farmstand for several weeks in June and July and they were quite the crowd pleaser! So, what exactly are microgreens? In simple terms, they are baby plants. Because of their size, they are more nutrient dense than mature produce. Johnny grows three types of microgreens on a vertical grow rack, while incorporating LED light and bottom watering to simulate an outdoor growing environment for greater efficiency. His favorites are sunflower and green pea and he adds them to his eggs in the morning.
“Microgreens are a fantastic way to beef up soups, salads, and any other meal,” Johnny shared.
We’re pleased to share that microgreens will be back on the Farmstand menu on August 5th. You can purchase hearty bags of sunflower, green pea, and/or broccoli microgreens for $5 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting Raleigh City Farm. You’ll get hyper local healthy food, support a nextgen farmer, and advance the mission of Raleigh City Farm. Bring on the greens!
